Online Grocery Shopping in Kathmandu: A Practical Guide

On this page
Online grocery shopping in Kathmandu now covers almost everything a household buys in a month, from rice and dal to detergent, snacks and drinks, delivered to your door or ready for pickup. Here is how it actually works, and how to get the most out of it.
Plenty of people in Kathmandu have tried ordering groceries online once, had a bad experience (a missing item, a three-hour wait, a phone call nobody answered) and gone back to the shop at the corner. That shop is not going anywhere, and it shouldn't. But for the big monthly shop, the heavy bags of atta and oil, or the night when guests turn up and the fridge is empty, ordering online saves a lot of time. This guide is what we would tell a friend who is trying it for the first time.
What you can buy online in Kathmandu
A good online store should carry the same things you would buy at a department store. On Vhandar that means:
- Staples: rice, atta and flour, dal, cooking oil and ghee, salt and sugar.
- Daily items: milk, bread, eggs, butter and cheese.
- Snacks and drinks: chips, biscuits, chocolates, cold drinks and juice.
- Household: cleaning essentials, personal care, baby care and tissues.
- Liquor: beer, whisky, wine and more in Liquors & Smoke, for customers aged 18 and above.
How delivery works
There are three ways to get your order, and the right one depends on how soon you need it.
| Option | How long | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Express delivery | About 45 minutes, within roughly 3 km of our store | Something you need right now |
| Standard delivery | A time window you pick, today or up to 4 days ahead | The weekly or monthly shop |
| Store pickup | Ready in about 20 minutes at our Koteshwor store | When you are passing by anyway |
Inside the Ring Road in Kathmandu and Lalitpur, standard delivery reaches every neighbourhood. You can check your own area on the delivery areas page, and checkout confirms your exact address before you pay anything.
Five habits that make online grocery shopping easier
1. Keep a running list
The easiest way to forget the salt is to try to remember everything on the day you order. Add items to your cart through the week as they run out. On Vhandar, your cart stays saved, so on Friday evening you just review it and place the order.
2. Order heavy things online, pick fresh things yourself if you like
A 25 kg sack of rice, a 5 litre jar of oil and a case of mineral water are exactly the things you don't want to carry home on a scooter. Many of our regular customers order all the heavy staples online and still buy their saag and tomatoes from the tarkari wala. That is a perfectly sensible split.
3. Check the unit price, not just the price
A 1 kg pack is not always cheaper per kilo than two 500 g packs, especially when one size is on offer. Product pages show the size clearly, so take ten seconds to compare.
4. Choose a delivery window you will actually be home for
Missed deliveries are the biggest cause of frustration on both sides. If you are at the office until six, pick an evening window rather than the earliest one available.
5. Check your order at the door
Count the items and look at the expiry dates while the rider is still there. If something is wrong, damaged or missing, tell us within 24 hours and we will sort it out at no cost. The full rules are on our return policy page.
Paying for your order
Right now you pay cash on delivery, once your groceries are in your hands. You see the exact delivery charge at checkout, before you place the order, so there are no surprises at the door. The minimum order is Rs. 500.
Is online grocery shopping more expensive?
It is a fair question. Prices on Vhandar are the prices you see on the website and app, and we try to keep everyday staples in line with what you would pay at a supermarket. The real saving for most families is time: no traffic, no parking, no queue on a Saturday morning. For many people that is worth more than the delivery charge, and store pickup is free if you prefer.
Frequently asked questions
Do you deliver outside the Ring Road?
Farther out in the valley we deliver larger orders. Add your address at checkout or see the delivery areas list to check what applies to you.
Can I track my order?
Yes. Open My Orders to see it move from Pending to Processing, Shipped and Delivered, along with your delivery partner's details once one is assigned.
Is there an app?
Yes, the Vhandar app is available for Android and iPhone, and it uses the same account as the website.
If you have not tried it yet, start small: order the heavy staples for one month and see how it fits your routine. That is how most of our regular customers began.
